And I can't sing backwards

I so should be in bed right now.  It's almost midnight and getting ready for 0900 church with four kids is killer.  Okay, make that almost impossible.  I'd rather write a modern version of War and Peace while singing He's a Yankee Doodle Dandy backwards.

But I digress.  I've been reading a lot lately about how to make your blog awesome, and how to get more readers, and how to be the most awesomest coolest blogger of all time.  (And no, I'm not sharing my resource for that one.)

And it really comes down to two main things.

1. You have to write a lot so you have stuff for people to read.

2. You have to be totally seriously passionate like ready to shout to the world how much you love whatever topic you have chosen your blog to be about.

So...for the Mom Nerd.....striiiiiiiike one!   Striiiiiiiiiike two!  Yeeeeerrrrrrr out!

Yep. I better turn in my Momnerd monogrammed towel now because I'm done for.  No passion. No fire. No flame.

Just a sad little spark with nowhere to go.

Okay, once again, I digress.

Here's the deal, so you help me decide:

  1. My blog has been hanging right around 160 subscribers, give or take, for months now.
  2. My readership is down, comments are fairly steady but still fairly on the down low.
  3. I love doing reviews and giveaways but I'm too busy to keep it up and plus I got sick of all the work it takes and I also got tired of readers who were just entering contests. (Not that I'm not one of those myself at times. And it's cool.  Really. I get it. Free stuff is awesome.)
  4. I have a hard time getting passionate about anything enough to write about it, oh, except for whining, as you die hards know. Which gets seriously annoying, even to me.
  5. Writing one line on facebook is easier than an entire post.
  6. I know posts with pics are more interesting but I'm too lazy.
  7. I don't really care about being the bestest coolest blog on the www anymore.

BUT

  1. I still love my blog.
  2. I am so grateful for the friends I've made through my blog.
  3. I like being The Mom Nerd
  4. I like having a place to vent and share and spew and whine and gripe and cry and laugh and, well, be me.  Whatever "me" happens to be at the moment.
  5. I love my readers, one and all.
  6. Blogging is easier than writing a novel or writing in my journal.
  7. The thought of burying my blog in the backyard with the berry bushes breaks my heart.

So what do YOU think?  To blog or not to blog? I know I can't put all the passion of a mountaintop singer into it.  I know I won't post as often as I should.  I'm pretty sure I won't start caring more about networking and tweeting and honkledoodling.  At least not at this time while I live in a world of poo.  No really, I do.  Seriously.  No lie.

So should I stay as I am...because I can't promise more.....

or should I rest my sorry soul with the sunflowers?

  1. You have berry bushes in your backyard? I'm jealous. ;) I've had some of the same issues with my blog. I had these thoughts about getting a ton of readers and got kind of jealous about a couple other blogs I read that started after mine but have way higher readership (yeah, mostly because they post things at least once a day). But then I thought that, no, I don't want to put the effort into writing an article daily or doing more frequent giveaways because that takes a lot of effort and I have more to my life than writing on the blog. Nothing against the folks who can write every day. I'll sure keep reading, but anyway, I'm feeling better about it all now--more at peace about just keeping on with what I'm best at which is I don't know for sure, but it's sure not putting up magazine quality articles at least once a day. So the point of all that was to just relax about your blog, do what you want to and spend the time you need to taking care of the rest of your life. I love it just like it is whatever it is that you make it. Wow, that was like a novel from me. :)

  2. My blog has 21 followers. But, I didn't set out to be oh so popular; my intention was to keep friends and family in touch with what we were doing. I certainly like when I learn I have a new reader, and I LOVE the comments, but when I don't get them, (very often) I still write. I know some people read it anyway, and I like having it to write in and log some history away.
What I'm trying to say is, you still have 160 readers. And since you don't care about being the bestest coolest blog anymore, I don't really understand why you'd stop blogging. You like having it, you don't want to bury it...so don't. You don't have to do what stresses you about the upkeep, just keep it for you. For what you want it for. There. My two cents ended up being closer to a quarter. Sorry.

  3. You just be who you want to be. Blog when you feel like it. You're awesome no matter what. You have almost 300 followers!
Actually, I need you to stick around and help me grow. (see how selfish I am?)
Not really... but if you could help me out, that would be cool!

  4. I heart your blog! Please don't bury it with the berry bushes! So what, you can't blog all the time, you have a life to tend to. Your readers get it... they all have lives too.
My thing is it's better to blog when you want to and have great post (like you do) than to blog everyday about something you don't have your heart in.

  5. I like your blog, and I say do what you do. It doesn't have to be anything more than what it is, and you don't have to apologize for its content. If you like it as it is, then keep on going with it!

  6. Count me in with your blog lovers here- like you I have a life I have to live and sometimes (like now) the blog takes a backseat. I'm cool with that. If I lose readers then I do, I'm not going to force myself to write when I just don't have it in me.
Don't apologize, just be yourself. No one can ask for anything more than that.

  7. Stick around. Blog when you want, when you feel inspired. You certainly do not need to blog everyday. Maybe if everyone vowed not to blog everyday, it would be easier to keep up on all my favorite blogs!

  8. Do what YOU feel like you need to do. We all have super busy times. Don't sweat it.

  9. For what it's worth - I enjoy reading your blog. Don't worry about being "the best" - just do it if it makes you happy. Don't let it become a chore. Enjoy it - blog about what you want to blog about. And at least you are writing, right? That's why I like my blogs - I can't seem to journal, but this I CAN do. :-)

  10. I think the moment a person stops trying to be the best blog on the www, is when the blog becomes a true reflection of herself. That is the key. I'm not a fan of blogs that try too hard, or try to get and keep readers by running giveaways (I steer clear of them mostly), because I'm out to read blogs that I can learn from and make friends from.

That said, my interest in my own blog definitely ebbs and flows. Right now I don't have a lot of desire (or time) to blog. So I stick to once or twice a week when something strikes me. And stuff usually does. It's just that when I am wanting to blog, I usually have more than enough posts. And taking a break when I am tired usually makes for better material in the long run, even if I lose one or two readers along the way because I'm not posting daily.

  11. I haven't read much, but so far, I like what I see!

As far as followers: Quality is more important than Quantity. (That is such a MOM thing to say.)

  12. I say don't quit (this is my connection to you), but don't stress yourself out over it. Blog when you want. Add pics if you want. Do a giveaway or review if you want to try something out. Don't stress, but don't quit. Just do what you can, when you can. :D

  13. If blogging makes YOU happy that is the only thing that should matter! I don't thnk even my friend read my blog anymore, but I still post because it is something I like to do!
I am not good at it, but I LIKE it and that counts for something!
