So I've had three comments now asking me how I managed to number my comments in blogger. I used the tutorial here but figured I'd post it here in "mom nerd" terms (aka, someone who is teaching herself all of this stuff without a clue) for all of you who would like to know.
Now many of you may be like me...you get into your html and it almost instantly starts to give you a headache. Most of what I've done with my blog (not that it's that wonderful) I've done from research and a lot of trial and error. By the way, if there is anything else you'd like to learn how to do and think it would be easier coming from me let me know in a comment!
Now remember, before you do anything save your template!
Okay, here goes:
1) Sign in to your blogger account and go to Layout and then Edit Html.
2) Look for the little box next to Expand Widget Templates and click on that little box. This will successfully make your html look even more confusing. ;)
3) Activate your find button. On most computers I think it is ctrl F, at least it is on mine, I really don't know. What this does on my computer is it brings up a little search box at the bottom left of my browser where I can search for words on that page. This is a great tool for checking to see if you have already commented on a giveaway with hundreds of comments.
4) In that find box type this:
this section should now be highlighted.
5) Directly underneath that part of the code, copy and paste this code:
6) Now go back down to your find box, clear it, and then copy and paste in this:
Once again that portion of code should be highlighted.
7) Directly under that portion of code copy and paste in this:
8) Then, make sure you click on preview before saving! You won't be able to see the numbers in this view but you will be able to find out if the code will even work. If you get an error message clear your edits and try again.
If this works for you let me know!
*** EDITED TO ADD: Hello everyone! I am shocked at how many people still read this! I wrote this quite some time ago and it is very possible that something has changed in blogger to make it not really work anymore. I don't really know how to help except to actually sign in myself and check out your code. So unless you want me to do that there isn't much I can do if it's not working. Sorry!*******

I tried it twice, but I can't get it to work. I have some experience with html, too. Hmmm... Is it just me?
ReplyDeleteI'd LOVE to know how to add a button to my blog !
ReplyDeleteI just don't get the whole text box with the code underneath AT ALL !! Or how you even come up with the code ~ lol.
It worked this time! Thanks for the tutorial!!
ReplyDeleteOMG!! Thank you so much!! Seriously, I spent an hour last night going over code. Finally, I just said some choice words and decided I'd count. LOL Thank you so much!!
ReplyDeleteI'd also love to know how to make buttons, my bro, love him to pieces was supposed to make me one, and hasn't done it.
I just wanted you to know that it worked perfectly for me. I have been wanting to number my comments even though I don't have that many comments to be numbered. You explained it wonderfully and made it very easy to understand. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteI would also love to know how to create a button. I have 2 blogs and would love to have buttons for them.
ReplyDeleteThank you - this is awesome.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the email and the tutorial. I am going to try it as soon as I have some more time.
ReplyDeleteEverything I have learned about computers, the internet and blogging has been self-taught. Lots of reading, research, googling and networking has resulted in a more techy me, not a super techy me, but at least I can find my way around!
Now if I can just figure out how to make my template three-column, I will have it made!
You are awesome Sharla! I researched this the other night on the net and could not figure it out for the life of me! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE learning new things! Thanks for the help!

ReplyDeleteThat was so easy for a dummy like me! Thankyou so much! Now, couldyou please post a tutorial on how to create a blog button?
ReplyDeleteYou TOTALLY rock! I have been trying to figure out how to put numbers on my comments for A LONG time and they always mess up the look of my blog! I am so sick of counting through hundreds of comments!
ReplyDeleteAND I love the ctrF trick...I had never heard of it before!
I was refered to this tutorial on your blog by Melanie of Whimsical Creations. I followed your very easy step-by-step instructions and it WORKED!! Thank you SO MUCH for taking time to explain this in the plain language!! I have mentioned you on my blog here http://everythingpapercrafts.blogspot.com/2009/04/coolest-thing-since-sliced-bread.html . Thanks again!! Irina

It won't work for me???
ReplyDeleteYay!
ReplyDeleteOk, I had to change from pop up comment box to embedded comments to make the numbers show up.
But then it worked!
Hi, I'm obviously doing some wrong because it accepts the code but does not show the numbers next to the comments. Out of preview mode that is. My html is little different as i could find an exact match to some of it, so i may have put in the wrong place. Any help would greatly appreciated! Thank you so much
ReplyDeleteFor the love... I was so excited to find this tutorial because I have had so many not work. Everything seemed to work fine, but alas, my comments are not numbered. Can you please help? I am happy to even give you access to my code...
ReplyDeletenever mind, never mind! IT WORKED!
ReplyDeleteYAY! I am so excited it works, thanks for the easy tut. Two of a Kind Working on a Full House sent me over to you :)
ReplyDeleteMommyof2girls sent me and it works great! Thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteMom Nerd You Rock!!! THanks so much
ReplyDeleteI can not for the life of me figure this out...and I'm experienced with HTML. Could it be because I have a custom blog design?!
ReplyDeleteI can't get this to work, but I am going to keep trying. I don't have the first code I am supposed to find. I just wanted to tell you that from one mom nerd to another, you are da bomb!
ReplyDeletegot it! you're real smart!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I am having the following problem.
ReplyDeleteALL the tutorials I am finding use
dl id='comments-block'
but mine look like:
dl class='comments-block' id='comments-block'
So I searched comments-block and it came up several times.
Thanks.
I had to remove the < and >
Sorry, I ditzed out.
ReplyDeleteIt never occured to me to play around with the code and figure out where to put it.
Thanks so much for the easy to read and understand tutorial.
In the event that anyone has the same problem and reads this, this is what I added the first step after:
dl expr:class='data:post.avatarIndentClass' id='comments-block'
(Once again, had to remove the "<" and ">" to be able to show it.
I had to change it from pop out to embedded. The problem is then after 200 comments I can not find the other ones and there is no comment box. If anyone can help I appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteNot trying to get traffic but this is the post it is happening on
http://www.buckdaddyblog.com/2009/09/2-elf-makeup-collection-giveaway.html
Is it just me? I can't find the first HTML.
ReplyDeleteAnn, I couldn't see a way to contact you but did you make sure you clicked the expand widget box?
ReplyDeleteIt did work, I had to hunt all through the code... I've got a mac and don't know how to use finder. But thanks for the clear instructions.
ReplyDeleteI did the instructions perfectly but can't get them to work I need help not sure what's wrong
ReplyDeleteI see now yes you are perfectly right. I was looking in the pop up box. Thank you so very much for your instructions I'm going to send others to this post for help.
ReplyDeleteThanks Again. U have saved me a huge headache
I have a follow up question...on my blog (http://BloggerMommies.blogspot.com) my comments are numbered but they only go up to 200, then they start at 1 again. The total count shows the real amount, but the numbers themselves only go to 200.
ReplyDeleteAny thoughts on why that is or how to fix it?
I came from Night owl mama, and I've tried from another site, can't get it to work - please help!!
ReplyDeletelol love your comment quote up there! too funny! anyways this was working for me yesturday but today I had to redo some stuff on the blog now it won't work...I've tried this all day any suggestions?? i have giveaways that i need to find the winners by the numbers..help

ReplyDeletewww.shelleysswag.blogspot.com
Have a great day :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting about this. I have been trying to figure out how to do this for a while now and have been unsuccessful. Thanks to the tutorial, I was able to successfully add numbered comments on the first try.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting as far as expand widget templates. Then I get stuck at Ctrl F. Help?
ReplyDeleteHI I used your tutorial, and it worked...sort of. Numbers 1 and 2 end up on the first comment instead of separated.
ReplyDeleteCan you help me figure out why it did that?
http://lastshredsofsanity.com
Sorry, my URl is http://www.lastshredsofsanity.com
ReplyDeleteI had my comments numbered...
ReplyDeletethen I changed my background and EVERYTHING got messed up.
I can not get the numbers back on it...
Any help would REALLY be appreciated!
Thank you!
Thank you so much! It worked really well and right away!
ReplyDeleteok how nice of you to post this. I am on step 6 and using FIND I can't find that text to copy and paste the next step in. Why not???
ReplyDeleteThanks, Brandy
the buzz
I have another older blog and I used a different tutorial for that one a wee whiley back. I remember it was complicated.
ReplyDeleteThis time the same tutorial I used before was no longer available but yours ranked high in a search. Not only were your instructions much easier to follow but results were immediate. It took a few minutes and "presto"! Numbered comments! Thank you soooo much!
It worked!!! And I'm a techie mess!
ReplyDeleteTwo things....my HTML didn't look like what is featured in your post but thanks to Melinda's comment I was able to find this:
dl class='comments-block' id='comments-block'
I also had to change away from pop up comments to get the numbering to show!
If I could get it....anyone can!!!
This worked GREAT! Thanks so much!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this, I tried to do this from a few other tutorial and could not figure it out. This was clear and easy to follow. I love the ctrl f find feature, I never knew about it before. You just made finding my giveaway winner so much easier!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDidn't work for me :( Not sure why not.
ReplyDeleteYOU'RE AWESOME!!!! THANK YOU! it worked for me after one try! :)
ReplyDeleteWorked PERFECTLY!!! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteIt did not work for me : (
ReplyDeleteI'm so sad. Nothing's working. I tried it with Melinda's modifications because I couldn't find your exact html and it's still not working. I've waited a few minutes. Tried closing my blog and reopening, changed my comments from pop up to embedded. Nothing is happening. I'm so disappointed. Am I one of those that it just won't work for?
ReplyDeleteAmazing blog. Love this design very much. I am going to try numbering comments in my blog. I am not sure whether it works or not.....
ReplyDeletehi I was wondering I changed my template and now trying to number comments again but there isn't
ReplyDeletea in my template. I just don't know what else to do but ask. Hopefully you can help
Thanks in advance. I'm about to go into tears. I just wish I knew more about coding it's so frustrating
LOOKS Like your #6 phrase I typed above did show.
ReplyDeleteYea...I can't get it to work ;(
ReplyDeleteI don't get an error just dont see any number......;(
Hi there,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't get it to work. I tried 3 times. Any suggestions?
thanks a bunch,
Michelle
Fantastic. One thing to note is that, depending on your template, there may be class or other attributes intervening between the "dl" and the "id='comments-block", so you may be better served to search for "id='comments-block". There was actually logic around my comments so that there were two such sections. All that being said, it worked like a dream. Now to go style my numbers ...
ReplyDeleteHi, I consider myself computer literate, but I cannot get this to work. I have followed all the instructions and suggestions in the comments. I'm so bummed!
ReplyDeleteI found another post that tweaked your tutorial and it worked for me:
ReplyDeletehttp://1stfloorflatcomputery.blogspot.com/2009/11/how-to-number-your-comments.html
Yay!
I can't find that code.
ReplyDeleteI can't get it to work either, think it's the 2nd part of the code. My blog is http://linorstorecom.blogspot.com. When you get a chance, could you please take a look?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. This would be so good for my upcoming giveaway ...
Linda
Hi mom nerd...I am trying to add numbers to my comments and I did everything you said to do. I read countless articles on google on how to do this and yours were the most helpful...what am i doing wrong??? thanks so much! www.theurbanbaker.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI could not get it to work for me either. Such a pain. Thank you for the try though
ReplyDeleteIt worked great but doesn't work for comments over 200.
ReplyDeleteWell I have given this a try but think I will have to post something new and see if the comments are numbered. I figure it won't be retroactive on the other comments just on a new post. Thanks. Can't wait to have a better look around here when I don't have to rush out to work.
